Founder Robert Holmes
Our Heritage

Five Generations of Literary Stewardship

In 1894, Robert Holmes laid the cornerstone of what would become a West Coast institution. With a profound dedication to the written word and an unyielding commitment to preserving the history of the American West, he established Holmes Book Company as more than a retail space—it was conceived as a sanctuary for knowledge.

His journey began in Hogsthorop, England, and eventually landed in San Francisco, where he curated collections that captured the spirit of the frontier. Under his stewardship, the company navigated the trials of the early 20th century, including the 1906 earthquake, emerging each time with a reinforced mission to safeguard the literary heritage of California and beyond.

"Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors."
